It’s funny how much plans can change throughout a year from what you originally had in mind. Although 2013 was a busy travel year for me, there were a lot of unexpected trips and adventures. So without further ado, here is my review of 2013!
North American International Auto Show
Every year I begin with one of my favorite events, the North American International Auto Show in my hometown of Detroit. I’m kind of a car geek, so I love seeing all the new vehicles that might be coming out soon and others that are only concepts and won’t ever see the light of day. Some of my favorites this year were the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and the Chevrolet C7 Corvette Stingray.
My First Trip to Las Vegas!
In February, I went to Sin City for the first time for my good friend’s birthday. There was a lot of travel hacking, copious amounts of alcohol, and more debauchery than should have been allowed in one weekend. I saw Paris and wrote about the coolest casinos on the strip. I will definitely be back to Las Vegas soon!
After writing about some travel hacking strategies in Las Vegas, I wanted to share some of my favorite casinos. Although I really didn’t gamble at all except for a couple of bets at the sports book, these are the casinos I found the most interestingly themed and visually appealing. See if you agree.
Having a mini-replica of one of the world’s most famous towers, Paris Casino is one of the most iconic figures on the Las Vegas strip.
From the French theme we go to an ancient Greek theme at Caesar’s Palace. With all the luxury shops and boutiques, this would have been quite a palace for Caesar!
How many places do know that offer indoor gondola rides? The only one I’ve ever seen is here at The Venetian Las Vegas.
Las Vegas is a great place to spend a weekend, but it is definitely not a budget destination (if you do it right, at least). Here are some tips on how you can do a bit of travel hacking and get hooked up in Sin City without spending a fortune. These are all things that worked for me on a recent trip.
1) Getting Into the Top Nightclubs in Vegas
I’ll start with one of the biggest hacks of the trip. The main reason I wanted to go to Las Vegas was to party at some of the top nightclubs in the world. However, lots of other people have that same idea, which can lead to long lines and wait times to get in. Before I left, I did a bit of research online to find the names and phone numbers for promoters for all the clubs I wanted to go to. I sent them a message saying something along the lines of ‘I’m bringing a bunch of friends out to Las Vegas for a crazy weekend. Can I get our group on the guest list?’ This accomplishes 2 things: 1) you get to skip the ridiculously long lines at the clubs and walk right in with your group, and 2) girls will most likely get in for free. There are a few caveats to this, though. First, your group must have at least a 1:1 girl/guy ratio and the more girls the better. Second, guys will still pay the ridiculous cover charge, usually $40-$50 at most of the clubs (if you know how to get around that, definitely let me know!) Third, the entire group will have to be at the club before 11p (or sometimes 12a if you negotiate with the promoter). I used this hack to get into Tryst, Surrender (to see Afrojack), and Marquee, and I have to say that they were all AMAZING!
